unable to hold to his vow. His attempt to prove to himself she couldn't be the woman for him by exposing her to children had backfired in his face. The kids had loved her, and from the look on her face when he'd come upon D.J. with the little girl sleeping in her arms, she'd loved them right back.
This morning, when she'd appeared at his doorway after sleeping in his house, his heart had contracted at the sight of her tousled beauty. She'd seemed uncomfortable and just a bit shy. He liked her that waythough her tough facade intrigued him too.
Hell, he might as well admit it to himself: Everything about D.J. Halloran made him half crazy with desire.
His celibacy had never been much of a problem before. Sure, he'd become frustrated, but all he had to do was remember the life his parents had lived in contrast to the anger and hate he'd witnessed in the home of his foster family. He would have what his parents had no matter what the cost to himself. He wouldn't give in to his desires and ruin his life and D.J.'s.
Silly and stupid and chauvinistic as it might be, he wanted to spend his life with a woman who valued family as much as he did. He didn't want a career woman, especially one with a job as dangerous as D.J.'s. After the loss of his parents to violence he couldn't survive the loss of a wife to the same horror.
